29/07: Stan visits the Chilean lab.

In May, 2008 I spent 10 days in Kepler Data Recovery labs for experience exchange. It was very valuable time, all 10 days where rich on impressions and discoveries. I was pleasantly surprised to see in Santiago de Chile the data recovery company which works in all strictness of the best European and North American data recovery companies like Action Front or IBAS; Kepler for sure is not so big, but anyway endly quality of services depends not from size of company but from experience of personnel, used technologies and equipment, and possibility to learn.

All these tips are in Kepler in highest place. First of all, all jobs are made by people. All Kepler’s technicians are exceptionally well-educated in data recovery questions, they knows all old and modern types of data media and can easily work with them. For me, it was a great surprise that Kepler’s technicians are multi-purposed specialists, it makes “brain work” extremely fresh and stable in high effort. In my opinion, only constant mind exercise makes good specialists, and Kepler’s technicians every day have this exercise.

As I think, Kepler is most perspective data recovery company in South America, and with no doubts, the best in Chile. 26/09: From Retrievable to Irrecoverable in just 5 Minutes!!!

Last month I attended a talk about new Technologies on hard drives that was hosted by executives of a very well known brand in the market. Topics such as the increasing storage capacity per square centimeter, the size of the buffers, and the speed at which the platter can spin on its axis were recurring topics in this very well organized presentation.

During the talk, somebody in the audience commented about his data loss experience due to a power surge. He told us about how he had replaced the logic board with that of an identical hard drive. He was not successful, so he also commented about his anguish and frustration due to the evident loss of his data.

The presenters smiled and stated that “switching boards is a common practice, however, though it sometimes works, it is not always successful due to the fact that drives from the same family may or may not operate with identical boards.”

21/08: ¿Data? – You are what you are made up of.

HI there!

We never really take the time to think about the composition of our data mainly due to the fact that all we would find is nothing more than a set of binary numbers (in an editor, it would be impossible to see the magnetic changes of the data in a hard drive or a CD-Rom.) However, if we analyzed them a little, we would be able to define what kind of data we are talking about.

Though it is way more complicated than what you are about to see, here we introduce a brief description of some of the commonly used file types.

31/05: WinFS

Hi friends, let’s talk this time about the new concept in file manager that will be introduced by Microsoft in its new Operating system Windows Vista. The name of this new file administration is “WinFS”.

WinFS is a new file system that it’s being developed by Microsoft to be used in its new operating system Windows Vista. At the begining this name means Windows Future Storage, but now is only Windows File System. Acctually, there is no clear information about what “WinFS” is. Some people say that is a complete new file system and others say that WinFS is only an extension of the actual system because many of the file system work is done by NTFS.

17/05: 'Super-Perpendicular' hard drive from Hitachi

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies has announced a new Travelstar 5K160 2.5″ mobile hard drive that uses perpendicular recording technology. The drive will offer capacities up to 160 GB, an 8 MB cache, and a 5,400 RPM spindle speed. While this won’t be the first 2.5″ hard drive to hit 160 GB with perpendicular recoding, Hitachi claims significantly higher reliability than other perpendicular drives thanks to a number of new additions:
